When Christa Ludwig talks about

music and singing, one could listen

endlessly, since she speaks so openly

and without any vanity about the difficult

profession of singing. As she points out, it is a

very stressful job that constantly forces singers

to forego other things. It should be fascinating

to hear what Christa Ludwig has to say to the

young singers participating in her public

master class on August 12 at 3:00 pm at the

University’s Main Auditorium. The event is

part of the Young Singers Project – A cultural

engagement of Credit Suisse.

The basic prerequisite for a great career as a

singer is not just to produce beautiful notes, the

daughter of a singer and a singing teacher

emphasizes. “My mother always said: you have

to be like a dry bathing sponge and absorb all

the good influences.” The most important

things in music are not written in the score:

“Just producing notes is terribly boring.” She

herself only felt like a mature musician when

she was 40.

Christa Ludwig points out that the youngest

generation of singers has a hard time: “There

are so many singers today!” Christa Ludwig

does not teach regularly. However, as she herself

says, she takes singers under her wing occasionally.

The YSP master class is a rare opportunity

to witness Christa Ludwig as a pedagogue:

“When a singer comes to me and wants to

know something, I help him. But I do not

teach. That is too strenuous for me, I am too

old,” she says with a laugh, “no, I want to enjoy

my life now!”

The final concert of the Young Singers Project

takes place on August 26 at 6:00 pm at the

Mozarteum.

Christa Ludwig sabía desde hacía meses que teníamos pendiente una entrevista pero, a pesar de que nos habíamos visto en Salzburg, Viena, Munich y Hamburgo, no se pudo encontrar la ocasión apropiada. Y fue ella misma la que sugirió que podríamos aprovechar una pausa en los ensayos de orquesta con Solti, que coincidían con una estancia mía en la capital austríaca, entre dos viajes a Milán y Munich. Por una invitación de Sanjust, y contando con el permiso de Solti, tuve el placer de asistir a unos ensayos y así, finalmente, la señora Ludwig y yo pudimos charlar ampliamente, en dos sesiones, la primera en su camerino y la segunda en una sala de ensayos, donde nos interrumpían de vez en cuando los obreros ocupados en la preparación del Baile. Me doy cuenta de que las dimensiones de esta entrevista son anormales, pero prefiero reproducirla literalmente dado su interés.
